Finding affordable care.
Start with the kind of help you need: a regular doctor, dental care, health coverage, or assistance with an existing bill. Different programs solve different problems. A low-cost clinic visit and an insurance plan are not the same thing.
Look for a community health center. HRSA's locator lets you search for health centers near your home. These centers serve people with or without insurance. Ask the center about its sliding fee scale, the service you need, and what information to bring. The amount you pay depends on the center's assessment; finding a listing does not mean every service is free. Find a health center · How health center fees work
Explore coverage and benefits. Start with your state's official Medicaid application guidance and insurance marketplace. Eligibility depends on the program and your circumstances. States use different application systems: Illinois, for example, has its own marketplace. Use an official application or ask the program for help rather than assuming income alone determines the outcome. Find your state's marketplace · Get Covered Illinois
Check local resources. Your state health department can help you locate public health services. In Texas, 2-1-1 also lists health, transportation, food, and housing resources. Available services vary by location and program; contact the organization before making a trip. Tennessee local health departments · South Carolina local health services · 2-1-1 Texas
Before you book, keep a short checklist: Is this location accepting patients? What might the visit cost? Are tests billed separately? Is there help with transportation or language access? Write down the answers and the name of the person you spoke with.
