Help with hospital bills.
A hospital bill may come with options for financial assistance. You may see this called “charity care.” A payment plan spreads payments over time; financial assistance may reduce the amount you owe. Ask specifically which option is being discussed.
Request the policy first. Tax-exempt hospitals must have a written financial assistance policy. It explains eligibility, covered care, and how to apply. Request the policy, application, and plain-language summary from the hospital's billing office or website. These documents must be available without charge. Check which separately billing doctors are covered; one approval may not apply to every bill from the visit. IRS explanation of hospital financial assistance policies
Follow that hospital's instructions. Read the requirements and application deadline. Gather the documents requested, keep a copy of what you submit, and ask for help if a question is unclear. Receiving a bill does not itself tell you whether you qualify.
Ask what happens while you wait. Find out how long review usually takes, how to check your application, and what happens to your bill during review. If a collector is involved, tell them you have applied and ask whether collection activity can be paused. Do not assume an application automatically stops every bill or deadline.
If assistance is unavailable, ask the billing office about other discounts or payment arrangements and request the terms in writing. Hospitals and other providers may have different options. CMS guide to applying for medical bill assistance
